Dohā by Bijayini Satpathy
28 June, Saturday, 19:00
Dohā, or couplet, is Bijayini Satpathy’s first evening-length choreography. Navigating the relationship between prayer and play, the work is a culmination of her year-long residency at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York in 2022-23.
The idea of prayer is central to the Odissi dance form, and much of the traditional repertoire addresses or praises a deity. In this work, however, Bijayini abandons theistic depictions to emphasize the bhāva – the emotional experience – of prayer as an embodied human act. Through intricately patterned choreography, she constructs her own solitary rituals, oscillating between precision and spontaneity. Within the strictures of ritualized prayer, she embraces play and playfulness as an essential part of the individual’s search for the divine.
Bijayini’s long-standing interest in expanding Odissi’s physical vocabulary finds new direction in this work, which looks beyond gestural ornamentation. Here, Bijayini hones in on the skeletal nuances of Odissi’s lexicon to find abundance and sensuality within a more austere palette. She also moves away from textual narrative and performs only one couplet of poetry, written by the 18th-century Urdu poet Mir Taqi Mir. The lines address neither god nor beloved. Instead, they talk about slowing down even the smallest breath to appreciate the fragility of the universe.

A roving meal. Each edition of Dinner Service is designed in response to the emotional, seasonal, sensory. In July, we’re setting the table elsewhere—with multiple courses, a little ceremony, and strangers who probably won’t stay strangers for long.
At Home
A workshop series disguised as an afternoon in.
This season, we’ve moved across mixology, urban farming, and fermentation—each session an invitation to slow down and engage with care. Artists, practitioners, and friends lead small, intimate gatherings that move between the practical and the poetic.
At Home in the monsoon brings new forms of inquiry and conversation with it.
Inheritors
We’re tracing what is passed down—and what is remade. Inheritors asks how we hold memory, tradition, and change in the same hand. Coming soon.

Zero
Period
Taking inspiration from the zero show and the zero periods we had in school, we like to dedicate a time in the year for experimentation and exploration.
We are strong proponents of rigour and riyaaz; we know that it takes hard work, long hours, and many, many iterations in order to create something we can all be proud of.
Dear audience member,
I would like to invite you all, to take a leap of faith, dive deeper – and pledge to support the arts at G5A, even more than you already do!
Here are a few ideas to help enable us to remain independent and resilient.
- Attend more programs – not only for your consumption and pleasure, but also in solidarity with the voices that otherwise would remain silent and invisible. Be open, be supportive, be patient.
- Become a member and become a part of our family!
- Join us for coffee and cake mornings with the team, to get to know us and our work and inspire us to do better!

- Pick at least one program or project to support – with your heart, your skills, your resources, and most importantly, your funds.
- And finally, Follow us on all our platforms and Talk about us!
Now more than ever, G5A needs your presence and your partnership. So do consider this seriously, and talk to us about how you would like to support us.
