The Durga Chronicles

The Durga Chronicles

India Premiere – An experimental performance on women’s voices, violence, and resilience

The Durga Chronicles is conceived by internationally renowned dancer, choreographer, and scholar Dr Priya Srinivasan and musician Uthra Vijay. It emerges from a striking paradox: a world where goddesses destroy demons exists alongside one where real women continue to endure violence. Drawing on Durga as a symbol of feminine strength, the work unfolds as both a ritual of mourning and a space for reflection, honouring women’s lived experiences while invoking resilience, resistance, and collective voice.

Blending Indian classical music and dance with evocative visuals and layered storytelling, the production creates an immersive experience bringing together ritual, performance, and community voice. Originally developed and presented in Australia to critical acclaim, the Mumbai staging will feature Mumbai-based dancers and musicians, grounding the work in local artistic and cultural contexts.

The performance brings together Indian classical music, dance, and evocative visual storytelling, engaging deeply with themes of women’s experiences, violence, resilience, and collective voice.

Partnerships

G5A and Red Dot Foundation

The Mumbai presentation of The Durga Chronicles is supported through meaningful collaborations with partners whose work aligns closely with the project’s artistic and social concerns. G5A, a space dedicated to experimental and socially engaged arts practice, comes on board as a space and knowledge partner, offering a platform that nurtures critical dialogue, creative risk-taking, and community connection.

Alongside this, the project is engaging with Red Dot Foundation to explore community-centred initiatives that extend the conversations around gender, safety, and public space beyond the performance. Together, these partnerships situate The Durga Chronicles within a wider ecosystem of art, advocacy, and civic engagement in Mumbai.
