Melodies in Slow Motion – Soumik Datta (Premiere)
“Hailed as one of the most exciting musicians of his generation, Soumik Datta’s musical universe is as expansive as it is fearless” — Tapestry Festival
To mark Earth Day, award-winning musician and Earth Day Ambassador Soumik Datta bridges the divide between human art and biological intelligence. Merging his sarod with the hidden rhythms of the earth, Soumik and his Ensemble of virtuosos decode the secret languages of the natural world.
Melodies in Slow Motion uses field recordings and live music to transform microscopic biological movements into “ear cinema,” stretching the flutter of a wing and the pulse of a cell into a cinematic, slow-motion journey. The show pulses with the internal metronome of Circadian Rhythms. Where the Carnatic violin traces the soaring, microtonal shifts of birds in murmuration, the rhythms of the Tabla and Mridangam capture the architectural dance of honeybees.
From the choir of Cicadas to the underground Mycelial Networks that link our forests, the ensemble reveals the invisible threads that connect human life to the broader ecosystem.
Projected above the musicians, vibrant, uninhibited sketches by children from Pratham Creativity Clubs animate the geometric patterns of nature, portraying a shared vision of balance and flow.
Inspired by the fragility of our planet and the Trophic Cascades that define our survival, this show offers a colorful, urgent reflection on our role within the global orchestra of life.
